So you’ve already chosen your cow, made the payment, and are all set for Qurban. Then suddenly—bam! You get the news: the cow’s sick. Maybe it’s not eating, maybe it’s lying down looking miserable. Your heart skips a beat. Is your Qurban still valid? Do you need to buy another cow? Or is it game over?
A Common But Panicky Situation
You’ve chosen the strongest cow in the pen. Payment’s done. But before it can be slaughtered, you hear the cow’s down with a fever—can’t stand, won’t eat. And suddenly your mind races:
“Will my Qurban be wasted if the cow dies?”
“Do I have to top up and buy a new one?”
“If I proceed, is the ritual still valid?”
Relax, folks! This isn’t the first time it’s happened, and yes—Islam has clear answers for it.
First Things First – What Does Islam Say?
Here’s the good news: If the cow falls sick after you’ve paid and made your intention (niat) for Qurban, you’re not at fault and your Qurban can still be valid—as long as the sickness doesn’t severely affect the animal.
If the cow is still fit to be slaughtered and the meat is okay – go ahead, the Qurban is valid.
If the cow becomes too sick or dies before slaughter – then we look at two options:
- Can you afford to replace it? – It’s highly encouraged to get another one if possible.
- If you can’t afford a new one? – Don’t worry. Your reward is still there. Islam values your intention and sincere effort.

What Should You Do If It Happens?
- Contact the seller or Qurban centre – Some places offer replacements or alternatives.
- Confirm the cow’s condition – Don’t proceed with slaughter if the meat quality is affected.
- Keep your niat and tawakkal strong – You’ve done your part. The rest is in Allah’s hands.
How to Avoid This Situation?
- Choose a reputable Qurban provider that maintains proper animal care.
- Don’t book too early—closer to Eid is often safer.
- Always get proof of payment and agreement, just in case.
Final Thoughts
A sick cow after payment isn’t the end of your Qurban. Islam is practical, merciful, and looks at your effort, not just the outcome. As long as you’ve done your best and your heart is sincere, the reward is still there, InshaAllah
And hey—don’t forget to say a prayer for your cow too. May it recover in time and fulfill its noble role this Eid
